‘Skippy’ was the original name of the butchery established in 1920 and was named after the first owner. Since then there has been only 3 owners and now I am one of them.
Hi, I am Ben and here is my story. My family started off in the Auckland suburb of before moving down to Tauranga in 2002 purchasing Bethlehem Butchery from it’s second owner.
My father is a very passionate man. He taught me well over the years, about the love and care you put into your product, which has build our reputation that has spanned his lifetime as a butcher and I continue to grow on. My earliest memory of a butcher shop was when I was 5 or 6 years of age. At the end of a school day I would walk down the steep concrete steps out the back to get to the shop and straight into the chiller wherethe strings of cherios would be hanging on hooks. This is where my dad would find me having devoured about 20 cocktail sausages. My dad only had one other staff member working for him and from my early teens and when the shop was busy I would help washing dishes and when I was old enough I commenced my training through an apprenticeship with my dad and gained my qualifications and certificates in Butchery and Health and Safety at the age of 24. I have found cutting meat to be really therapeutic. 2 years later I bought the business from my dad and took over the legacy he created.
I continue to expand the business with more suppliers, more products and have given the front of the shop a facelift to offer our customers a welcoming, simple look that is easy on the eye and with a friendly feel.

Our Product
Our beef is sourced from highly reputable and certified grass fed, free range, antibiotic & hormone free farms. Our chicken is sourced from highly reputable and certified corn fed, free range organic farms. Our pork is sourced from highly reputable and certified free range farms and we dry smoke our bacon. See our list of suppliers below and their certifications. We offer tailored recipes that compliment a range of lifestyle choices or dietary requirements. From Gluten Free to Paleo, we are proud to say we were the first butcher in Tauranga to offer preservative free products.
Our Vision
We believe a busy lifestyle should not mean a compromise when it comes to the quality of meat available in today’s market. We pride ourselves on the fresh daily supply of all cuts of meat with the presentation of our packs is second to none. We have reputably the ‘best quality meat in all of Tauranga’.
COMMUNITY
Community support has always been a family passion and we are always keen to give back to the local community that supports us. Helping in fundraising events from Schools and Sports Teams to Individuals who are fundraising for their special events. We are happy to help wherever we can.
